Faster kayak wanted

27 04 2010

Whitewater Kayaking
Local multisporter Dave Hansen wants to upgrade his kayak to something a bit quicker, I think in response to some of the lads getting him out of breath on the weekly after work 10km down at the Wairau River.

If you have a JKK UFO or perhaps an Andrew Martin Sharp, then send him an email at hansen2000@slingshot.co.nz

NZ Multisport Championships

24 04 2010

The Multisport NZ Association are launching the NZ Multisport Champs in Feb 2011. (Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of them, you wouldn’t be alone)

With support from the Tasman District Council (thanks Tasman ratepayers) the first three years will be based in Kaiteriteri. The format of Kayak, MTB and Run follows that of the hugely successful Xterra in Rotorua (without the swim). In fact they are calling it the K-Terra.

This initiative is long overdue and it recognises the power of having age group athletes competing for national titles in the same way as they do in Triathlon. If you’ve been to a Tri NZ national champs you will know how hotly contested the age groups are. It gives athletes, sponsors and media a central focus.

Nathan Fa’avae and his company Ten Events are partnering with the Tasman District Council to get this off the ground. If Nathan has anything to do with it, it will be a great event.

“Hey Matt, can I borrow another surf Ski, this one’s broken”

Definitely not the conditions you can expect in Kaiteriteri

Blenheim cyclist Richard Anderson is heading to Switzerland on 1st of June in preparation for the World Champs in Canada in September.  He will be training and racing in the Swiss Cups, a couple of World Cup races and also some racing in Italy.

Richard is coached by Tony Catterick and this is a partnership seems to be producing great results. Richards’s results of note in the last year;

1st overall – Sth Island Secondary School Champs

1st senior – National Secondary Schools MTB Champs

2nd under 19 – National MTB Championsships

14th under 19 – World MTB Championships

This year so far:

Richard has placed 1st and 2nd in all racing this season, finishing it with winning the under 19 X-Country MTB National title and the National MTB Championships held in March..

This automatically qualifies him to represent New Zealand at the Worlds in Canada later this year.

Clearly, Richard has an exciting future in the sport.

“Dream” team blitzes Quadrathon

11 04 2010

Matt Thomson makes short work of the 7.6km paddle from Waikawa to Picton

Marlborough turned on a spectacular Autumn day for the Reidie Cycles Quadrathon today. The local Cycleworld team of Jono Lee, Matt Thomson, Ray Dunstan and Suzie Aviss made no contest of the teams race. All are NZ reps in their own sports of triathlon, kayaking , cycling and duathlon. Who can beat them next year?

In the individual race, triathlete Mark Grammer headed multisporter Josh Scott by 1.04 after 2hrs 15 minutes of swimming, kayaking, cycling and running.

Swim, Kayak, Cycle, Run…

2 04 2010

… Sunday’s Marlborough Quadrathon has got it all.

Sponsored this year by Reidie Cycles, this iconic event could well be New Zealand’s longest running multisport event. It begins with a 750m swim in Waikawa Bay (3 sides of a rectangle). You’ll have to navigate around a few moored boats, but it’s a great place to swim. The Kayak then heads around the “Snout” and through to Picton, a distance of 7.6km (GPS measured). This year the 29 km cycle starts as usual on the Picton foreshore, out through the carpark and heads to Rarangi, turning off SH1 at Tuamarina.

Off the bike at Rarangi, and it’s (immediately) up hill for the first 2km.  A short stretch of sealed road at the top of the road joins the track, and leads you down to the Whites Bay Surf Club. The track exits at the surf club car park. Turn around here and head straight back up the hill. Once back down to Rarangi, you’ll have a km out and back run to the fire station. A 7Km run. The Quadrathon run has always been challenging, previously taking in the Wither Hills, and this year will be no exception.

The Quadrathon is ideally suited to teams as each discipline is set a “doable” distance. Get together your work mates, school mates, or actual mates and enter a team.

Distribution coup for Cycleworld

1 04 2010

Blenheim bike shop Cycleworld has secured the exclusive NZ distribution rights to the new Unicycle Time Trial bike (UniTT). Designed and manufactured in the US by Unibikes, the UniTT is said to take some getting used to. Once your balance is sorted, the lack of friction from a front wheel gives you about 15% more speed. The “bike” does not have UCI approval for use in bike races or time trials but the UniTT can be used- for now- in triathlons. If you want to know more about the UniTT, call in to Cycleworld and chat to Ray.
