Junior Tri Squad starts 10 May

21 04 2013

20130421-205041.jpg

Starting next term Mark Grammer will be a starting a Triathlon swimming squad for yr 7-12 based at the Stadium 2000 pool. At this stage there will be one session at 4.30pm on Fridays. Starting with an easy 20 minute group jog (or spin bike session) from the Stadium and into the pool at 5pm, for a 45 minute swim session.

Swimming can be the most frustrating part of a triathlon if you haven’t learnt to swim efficiently as a kid, so there will be a strong focus on stroke mechanics and stroke correction over the winter. The sessions will also be fun and competitive with regular time trials, relays and some surprises.

You won’t need to be an expert swimmer, but should be able to swim 20 lengths non stop.

Numbers need to be limited so if you (or your child) are interested then get in contact with Mark ASAP.

Cost is $100 per term, which includes pool entry.

800m SWIM commences at the Waikawa Bay Jetty. Swim around buoys out in the bay and back to Waikawa Bay jetty. Exit on the south side of the jetty. Team swimmers must tag their kayaker at the waters edge before continuing their next swim lap. (Kayakers then run to their boats)  All swimmers will exit the water and round a cone at the waters edge on each lap. (note that this year there will also be 800m and 2400m Swim options as part of the Marlborough Open Water Swim Champs – more on that to follow)

8km KAYAK starts from Waikawa Bay foreshore, paddle to Whatamango Bay keeping to the shoreline on your true right all the way there. Once you have rounded Karaka point keep going all the way to the end of the bay near the small DOC camp ground. There will be a big orange marker buoy that competitors must go around, then head back to waikawa via the same route. Competitors are urged to stay as close as practical to the shore line in the interests of safety.

33km CYCLE leg leaves Waikawa bay and heads directly towards Picton, turning just before the township onto Wellington Street which goes up hill for two hundred meters before turning right into Broadway Street. At the end of this short street competitors turn left onto State highway 1. Cyclists head to Tuamarina and turn left here onto Pembers Road carrying into Rarangi Road. The cycle transition is near the Monkey bay carpark at the northern end of Rarangi beach.

8km RUN From the transition runners run up the walking track onto Port Underwood Road, then run along the right hand road verge for approximately 500meters then back onto the track that leads to Whites bay. Once past Whites bay runners will then join onto the Black Jack track which again heads up hill in a loop before returning to Whites Bay finishing on the grass next to the Surf Life Saving club rooms.

Picton Half Ironman – final notes

11 12 2012

Half ironman

The forecast for Sunday 16th is 27 deg with Northwesterlies. Perfect for a fast bike ride from Havelock to the Rapuara Road/ SH1 intersection at Spring Creek. Not so much for the final 20ish km.

While we’re talking about the Spring Creek corner, there is a 4 Square store right on the LHS of the corner which would be a good place to stop and buy another drink if it’s hot. Remember you have a hilly 21km run in the heat as well.

We will have a keyboard at the carpark that you can leave your car keys on whilst you are out “enjoying” yourself. Gold coin donation to the key holder. If you make use of this service, then we will know that everybody is back off the ride.

The plan is to have a kayaker at the turn point in the swim. This point will also be marked on the shoreline. That is, there will be no bouy in the water.

Swim start at 8.30am.

I will hopefully get some Dazzle on the ground to mark the run course by Sunday.

Do not get race brain and forget the road rules. There will be no witches hats and no marshalls.

I would recommend carrying a mobile phone on the bike. If you see someone with a puncture or other mishap, please stop to check that they are sorted.

Some people will be taking the bike ride seriously. If some one passes you that looks like they are, don’t draft them, you will piss them off.

Each lap of the run goes back through transition, so you will have two opportunities to refuel.  The run is largely sheltered and could get very hot, so I’d suggest having drinks set up here for yourself.

We will have a spreadsheet at the end, where you can record your own times.

Any questions, give me a call. Mark 021 533635

See you there. Have fun.

Picton Half Ironman 2012

29 10 2012

If you are preparing for Challenge Wanaka or Taupo Ironman, or you just want a solid day out, then this is for you.

Not strictly an “organised” event, in that there is no entry form (or fee) and you participate at your own risk (of getting competely knackered).

The gun will go off  at 8.30am on December 16th.

Swim. Out and back towards Bob’s Bay from the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club. Approx 2km. Wear a wetsuit. It is cold.

Bike.  Anticlockwise course around the “Groves”, taking in Queen Charlotte Drive (Hilly, Scenic and Awesome), Havelock (Coke available at petrol station) and Rapaura Road (long, windy and boring). Distance is around 96km.

Run. 3 laps taking in the Picton-Waikawa Track (rolling off-road) and Waikawa Road back to Picton (Footpath). 3 times over the Marina Bridge. 20ish km.

Transition. You will manage this yourself from your car. Somebody will be available too look after your keys if required. Gold coin donation to the key holder.

Timing. Wear a watch. If you want splits, press the lap button at each transition.

Rules. No drafting, no walking, no complaining, no outside assistance. There will be no marshalls, so obey the road rules and know where the course goes beforehand.

Teams. If you must.

Prizes. Of course not. If you need spot prizes to be involved in this, you probably need another event. But you will have the satisfaction of completing the inaugural Picton Half.

If you are keen to toe the line, give me a call or txt. Mark on 021 533 635.

Bike Fit Marlborough Winter Duathlon Series

25 04 2012

The Bike Fit Marlborough Winter Duathlon series kicks of at the Farm Park on May 6. Club events are open to people of all abilities. If you did the recent Go Marlborough mens or womens event at the Farm Park you will be familiar with the course. You are able to use any kind of bicycle.

The 6 May event will be run on a standard basis but with times recorded so the 24 June race can be done on handicap. After this stay tuned for some developments with regard to racing.

We have listened to the survey results with many liking the idea of a bit of variety so with this in mind we are planning on things such as: a pick and mix race (basically a team race with names drawn from a hat on the day as to who is in your team); a mountain bike option within a standard race; then later a mountain bike only race and so on.

Start and Finish for all races: Wither Hills Car park.

Michael Huntley Memorial Triathlon 1 April 2012

23 03 2012

Ryan Lock strides out in the duathlon section of the Michael Huntley Memorial

The Michael Huntley Memorial Triathlon and Duathlon is taking place on 1 April at Anakiwa. The race doubles as the Marlborough Triathlon & Multisport Club Champs and will be run over Olympic level distances (other options are also available). There will be a new champ this year as last year’s overall winner, Cory Mackay, is a non-starter in 2012.

The likely favourite for the Men’s race will be Jeremy McKenzie who has proven to be unbeatable in local races and is the current National Duathlon champ in his age group. He also finished 6th in the Coast to Coast and recently qualified for the Triathlon World Champs with a 4th place finish in Wellington. In the Women’s race last year’s winner Almuth Waechter is again the favourite. She recently won the Women’s section of the Quadrathon on the back of scant training in the kayak. As a proven runner and former New Zealand representative she will be hard to beat. Long course distances are as follows:

Triathlon: swim 1500m, bike 40k, run 10k

Duathlon: run 5k, bike 40k, run 10k

Other race options are shown below.

Marlborough Quadrathon 2012 results

18 03 2012

Race sponsor from Cycle World, Ray Dunstan, won "coolest kit" and fastest bike time.

A smaller than expected, but quality field took part in this years Quadrathon event. With the wind getting up, a change of course in the kayak leg was called for, with an out and back leg, twice around. This added to some extra spectator viewing at Waikawa Bay.

First out of the swim was vet team man Martin Fletcher followed by swim guns Mark Grammer and Aaron Davis.

The kayak section ended up in a battle of Cycleworld team member Mike Pike and individual Jeremy McKenzie, with McKenzie taking a small lead onto the bike over Ray Dunstan.

However once time trial specialist Ray got going and with someone to chase down, he was always going to be hard to beat to the next transition.

A 6 minute lead was more than enough for anchorman runner Dale Smit, who held on to record a well deserved team win for team Cycleworld over a fast finishing individual McKenzie, who had narrowed the gap to a little under 2 minutes.

The women’s race proved an even closer race between Almuth Waechter and Bek Schrep, with virtually nothing separating them after the swim and kayak leg. Almuth had the jump on Bek getting onto the bike, and with only a slender 2 and half minute led going into the run section, still had plenty of work to do to hold off Bek.

The “underdone”team of Mark Grammer, Tracey Richardson, Jamie Kidd and Pavel took out the mixed division over “Undecided” with placings here only decided on the final section of the run leg.

Summer Series final round results

11 03 2012

The final round of the Marlborough Triathlon and Multisport Club Summer Series was held in perfect conditions at the Wither Hills course today.

The long race consisted of a 5 km run, 20 km bike and 5 km run and a real dog fight developed between the young Argentinean flyer Franco Medina and the former New Zealand representative Ryan Lock. By the end of the first run leg Medina had a lead of 59 seconds but Lock is considered by many to be the better cyclist and gradually reeled him in on the bike leg. Not only did he eat into the lead but he passed Medina and went into transition holding a one minute 25 second lead. Medina said, ‘he passed me on the first lap in the cycle and I just wanted to keep him in sight, I knew he had a big lead and advantage in the first half of the run but I was feeling good and just decided to go faster and see what happened’. Medina gradually narrowed the gap, eventually passed Lock at the 2 km mark and powered away to eventually win by one minute 33 seconds.

In the Women’s section, Jess Barnes capped off a perfect week by winning in a time of 1.25.19. This was her third win in a week after a first place in the South Island Secondary School Duathlon champs under 19 the previous Sunday in Oamaru and a first on Wednesday in the Tasman Secondary Schools Triathlon under 19′s.

In other races, Dave Hansen made short work of the medium course of 2.5 km run, 16 km cycle and 2.5 km run to win comfortably in a time of 49.30.

Tiffany Guillemot was the first female home in a time of 1.15.56.

Jacob Crossley took first place in the 1 km/8 km/2.5 km race with a win in a time of 41.01, while in the mini race (500 m/2 km/1 km) Dylan Guillemot won in a time of 19.25.

Full results are here

The next race on the calendar is the Michael Huntley Memorial/Club Champs at Anakiwa on 1 April which will include both triathlon and duathlon options.
