 The annual Anakiwa Triathlon is on Saturday 21 January 2012.

The event has a number of race options which include a Triathlon, Duathlon and Multisport race.  All can be done in teams. All races start at the Thompsons Bay Jetty (the first one you get to when you drive into Anakiwa) and finish with an 8km run around Cullens Point and into Havelock township.

It’s bound to be another cracking series on the 6km out and back course. 

The event is handicapped so hopefully everyone will finish pretty close.

Dates are Nov 29,Dec 6, Dec 13, then resume in January on the 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st and Feb 7th

With some of the more fancied competitors unable to race due to prior commitments first time podium finishes for many were up for grabs. In the long triathlon, Antony Clark, a new-comer to triathlon, showed the benefits of a good cycle background not to mention his superb result in the recent half Ironman at Ashburton. First out of the pool was Cory McKay, but he began to show the signs of a lack of recent training and was quickly reeled in by the veteran Phil Binnie and Clark. Clark established a lead that he would never relinquish, going on to win in a time of 1.09.09.

 Binnie was using the race as part of his long build-up to the Taupo Ironman and finished in a very creditable 1.15.17. His result was all the more astonishing considering the day before he had participated in a 4 hour charity spin class. The young up and comer Will Hart was able to catch and pass a tiring McKay to finish in 1.17.16.

In the long Duathlon, Willem Lampe kept a steady pace throughout to win this category in a time of 1.06.40. Lampe’s main goal for the Summer is to compete in the iconic Coast to Coast and was using the race to introduce a degree of variety to his training. In the increasingly popular Aquathon the Argentinean and noted runner Franco Medina’s protestations of a lack of recent raining had many providing advice to the contrary when he cruised around the course in a time of 24.43.

Dan Busch took full advantage of the various channel options available and opened up a handy lead just before the Renwick bridge and was never threatened all the way to the finish. Christchurch veteran Ian Huntsman took a close second from local man Paul Bourgeois.

With only two and a half minutes separating the top three Wendy Riach from Christchurch, took line honors in the open women’s division, from Nelson’s Suzie Le Cren. Wellington’s Louise Hales rounded out the top three.

The veteran men’s section was won by Nelson’s Sam Dillon from John Harris and Peter Hoare, in what proved to be the biggest and most closely fought division of the day.

The Wairau river proved to be a great course and was well liked by the competitors. With this event the only down river race in the whole Tasman region it is sure to become a regular on the calendar

Jeremy McKenzie decided to race his first triathlon after a highly successful season in duathlon. In this race he was up against Ray Boardman and experienced veterans Phil Binnie, Martyn Crossley and Rene de Ruiter. Boardman proved to be the quickest swimmer and lead at the end of this leg but once on the bike McKenzie’s class came to the fore and by the end of the cycle he lead Boardman by over two and a half minutes and powered away in his favoured run leg to eventually win in a time of 1.02.24. Boardman was five and a half minutes back in 1.07.52. McKenzie was pleased with his performance and said afterwards ‘that was good fun, I have been doing a bit of swimming over the Winter mainly to keep my paddling rhythm going but it was good to race in a tri for the first time’. Binnie showed good form in his build-up to the Ironman in 2012 finishing in 1.14.22.

In what may be a first for the local race series the Women’s triathlon was won by McKenzie’s partner, Bek Scherp, in a time of 1.20.16.

In the long duathlon the young up and comer Jess Barnes was first Woman home in a very credible 1.14.35 and was pleased with her performance saying afterwards ‘that was good but this run is mentally challenging’. In the Men’s race there was a  the duel between former NZ age group representative Ryan Lock and the young flyer from Argentina Franco Medina. Medina, by his own admission, was not fully prepared having recently concentrated on supporting the Pumas in their World Cup endeavours. He lead Lock at the end of the run leg by 8 seconds. However from that point Lock’s superior cycling kicked in and he had a lead of six minutes going into the last run. Whilst Medina did eat into the gap Lock went on to win in a time of 1.03.00 with Medina following in 1.07.45.

The Aquathon, which was being trialled by the Club for the first time, proved popular with both runners and walkers alike. Logan Murphy showed a clean pair of heels to the opposition and finished in a time of 29.16 over Connor Guillemot in 30.07 and Jacob Crossley at 31.10.

The next race of the series is scheduled for 20 November.
