This Saturday many of Marlborough’s triathletes will be competing in the South Island Half Ironman Champs in Lake Hood near Ashburton. Martyn Crossley, Rachel Monk, Michelle Catterick, Sharon de Castro, Leonie van den Bergh and Marg McKendry are having their first crack at this event. Steve Smith, Almuth Waechter, Yasmin Gee, and Lynne Haines all competed last year and are having another go. For local veteran Phil – the blokes lane was full – Binnie, it will be his third year in a row at the event.

This year 115 individuals and 30 teams have entered in the Half Ironman with more attempting shorter distance triathlons and another 100 runners have entered the Half Marathon being staged at the same time. The swim leg is a two lap course in the lake for a total of 1.9 km, followed by a two circuit bike ride which is 90 km in total and lastly the competitors return to the lake and run around it three times to complete the last 21 km run leg. The race starts at 8am on 28 November.
