World Duathlon Champs

3 09 2010

The 2010 ITU Duathlon World Championships are set to take place this weekend, 3-5 September, in Scotland. World titles will be contested at Edinburgh’s iconic, and very hilly, Holyrood Park – one of the most challenging courses ever used for an ITU Duathlon World Championships.

Ryan Lock and Susie Aviss from Marlborough are competing with the New Zealand Agre Group Team.

Some comments from Ryan yesterday:

The set up here is pretty good – the “Pollock Halls” of residence here (part of the 1986 Commonwealth dames village but now student halls of residence) is right next to the duathlon course. The weather has been good so far – getting right up to 17 or 18 degrees each day !! The bad news is that the cycle course is very narrow so that it is one way traffic only. And of course this is not the way that we will actually be racing. Official cycle practice (going the right way will be restricted to 2 hours on Friday (the night before the event). My race is first up (8am) on Saturday which is good because I will get it over with early but it might still be a bit cool. Feeling good. Ryan.

Update:

Tri NZ had this to say about the day – awoke to mist over the Holyrood Park Course, which burnt off fast and the athletes were treated to a stunning Scotland summers day with the temperature reaching 20 Degrees, so nice racing conditions for all. Racing kicked off with the first wave starting at 8am and final wave at 3.30pm.

Susie Aviss had an unfortunate DNF and had this to say – “no good for me puncture on the 3rd lap of four. Was feeling excellent on the bike after a pretty average run and got myself into 3rd place. No wheel drops and I was running tubulars. Pretty upbeat about it though. Always the risk you take.”

Ryan Lock finished a creditable 10th in his age group.
