Summer Tri/Du Series Round 4

19 01 2011

Windy conditions slowed athletes down on Sunday morning during race 4 of the Blenheim Physiotherapy Cycle World summer series triathlon/ duathlon 2010-2011.

Talented Jono Lee took out the triathlon over 750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run in a fast 1.02.17. Lee is slowly getting back into racing again after an injury rest period. “ I have been running again for 2 weeks, and it feels good to be able to run freely again. I had a solid swim and a good bike but just enjoyed it in the run”. Lee’s splits: 10.21 ( 750m swim), 32.55 ( 20k bike) and 19.01 ( 5k bike) confirm this objectively.

Lee is aiming for peak fitness when he competes at the national championships in Wellington on the 12th of March. “ I have decided to have a crack at the national title ( age- group), since my running is not fast enough. To be successful at the under 23 age group ( which consist of a draft legal bike leg) I have to be able to run faster.”

Second place in the triathlon went to Will Hart, (1.14.04) with Corey Mackay third (1.15.16).

Caroline McCarthy was first woman home in 1.26.10.

Rookie Glen Marfell upset pre race favorite Ryan Lock when he overtook Lock in the third lap ( 3 k) of the last 5k run in the long duathlon over 2.5k run, 20k bike, 5k run.

Marfell and Lock finished the first run together in a time of 9.26. After the bike Lock built up a 11 seconds advantage over Marfell: 1.02.28 versus 1.02.39. Glen Marfell put on the after burners in the last run when he ran a 21.42. ( against Lock’s 22.33) Lock’s comment: “Glen had a great tactical race, and it worked well for him. It was not easy in the wind and the heath”.

Bruce Hillis finished third in 1.11.02.

A faster bike split was the secret to Rachel Monk’ win in the long duathlon woman’s race.

Sally Hale had the faster opening 2.5k run ( 10.29 versus 10.46) and closing 5k run ( 22.29 versus 23.09) but Monk was 51 seconds faster on the bike ( 39.29 versus 40.20). The finishing time in this exciting battle: 1.12.24 ( Monk, first) and 1.13.18 ( Hale, second). Monk will compete at the selection race in Timaru in 2 weeks time when she is looking for selection to compete at the World Championships Duathlon later this year in Spain.

Collette Marfell finished third in 1.23.31.
