The final round of the Marlborough Triathlon and Multisport Club Summer Series was held in perfect conditions at the Wither Hills course today.

The long race consisted of a 5 km run, 20 km bike and 5 km run and a real dog fight developed between the young Argentinean flyer Franco Medina and the former New Zealand representative Ryan Lock. By the end of the first run leg Medina had a lead of 59 seconds but Lock is considered by many to be the better cyclist and gradually reeled him in on the bike leg. Not only did he eat into the lead but he passed Medina and went into transition holding a one minute 25 second lead. Medina said, ‘he passed me on the first lap in the cycle and I just wanted to keep him in sight, I knew he had a big lead and advantage in the first half of the run but I was feeling good and just decided to go faster and see what happened’. Medina gradually narrowed the gap, eventually passed Lock at the 2 km mark and powered away to eventually win by one minute 33 seconds.

In the Women’s section, Jess Barnes capped off a perfect week by winning in a time of 1.25.19. This was her third win in a week after a first place in the South Island Secondary School Duathlon champs under 19 the previous Sunday in Oamaru and a first on Wednesday in the Tasman Secondary Schools Triathlon under 19’s.

In other races, Dave Hansen made short work of the medium course of 2.5 km run, 16 km cycle and 2.5 km run to win comfortably in a time of 49.30.

Tiffany Guillemot was the first female home in a time of 1.15.56.

Jacob Crossley took first place in the 1 km/8 km/2.5 km race with a win in a time of 41.01, while in the mini race (500 m/2 km/1 km) Dylan Guillemot won in a time of 19.25.
