Fergus Greer tackles the long duathlon

The third round of the BikeFit Marlborough Winter Duathlon Series took place on Sunday at the Wither Hills Farm circuit. The long race over a course of 5km run, 20 km bike and 5 km run was organised differently to previous events with competitors being randomly drawn in teams of two with each person doing the full course. The teams average speed was then used to determine final placings.

The winner was expected to come from one of three teams – the speedy Jeremy McKenzie who was placed with the relatively inexperienced Bob Tate, accomplished athletes Dave Grono and Rachel Monk or the pairing of the vastly improved Will Hart and his triathlon coach Ray Boardman.

As expected Jeremy McKenzie ran away from the field on the run leg to complete the first 5 km in a time of 16.25 to take a lead on to the bike of just over 2 minutes from Dave Grono and Robbie Barnes.  By the end of the cycle leg McKenzie had increased his lead over Grono to 5 minutes. He comfortably took line honours in a time of 1.07.10.

The race for line honours for the Women was a much tighter affair and a good battle developed between the experienced Rachel Monk, the winner of many local races in the past, and the up and coming Jess Barnes. Barnes had lead Monk into the first transition by a matter of seconds. By the end of the cycle leg she held a 19 second advantage and was able to slightly improve on this on the last run to take the honours in a time of 1.23.25, twenty two seconds ahead of Monk.

The race proved that in triathlon and duathlon seconds do count because only 48 seconds separated the three fastest teams. Bob Tate was able to do enough in the last 200 m to secure first place for the McKenzie/Tate combination whose time of 1.19.06 proved to be the fastest average on the day. Monk and Grono’s efforts produced an average team time of 1.19.09 which was only 3 seconds off the leaders. The third fastest team was the Hart/Boardman combination in a time of 1.19.54.

Other individual performances of note included Will Hart continuing to show massive improvements and taking minutes off his personal best for the second month in succession. This time the improvement was 4 minutes meaning he has shaved 10 minutes off his best time in two months. Youngster Fergus Greer showed similar improvement in his second long course event knocking a staggering 7 minutes off his last race time while Connor Guillemot stepped up to a long race for the first time and was completely spent by the end finishing in a highly credible time of 1.41.13.

The medium duathlon was run over distances of 2.5km run, 16 km ride and 2.5 km run. Anton Horton showed the field a clean pair of heels to finish in a time of 58.51 to record his second win in as many months while Mel Jones was the first Woman home in 1.04.18.

The short course event was a 2.5 km run followed by an 8km bike and ended with a 1 km run and Toby McKendry did enough to finish first in time of 43.18. The next event is scheduled for 12 August with course details to be advised.
